Of Truth and Law

“Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.”
- Henry David Thoreau

This quote weighs heavily on my mind. Is thoreau telling us to break laws, or is he simply tellling us they were wrongly made in the first place? Surely some authority is needed to maintain civilization. Or would he have us all savage? Not like my ancestors. They had and have authority. But if our world in its current state were to be cut loose surely we would war and kill and steal and destroy. Our Earth would be a nuclear warzone and a  million mile graveyard. Surely Mr. Thoreau does not wish this to be true? Or does he? Is our world better without our existence? Are we simply a leech that should have never been? Have we been clothed, fed, housed by an Earth that deserved better? This is quite possible. But I believe that Thoreau truly meant to do what is right and what your heart tells you, not what is lawful.
